Messages from the Masters

Messages from the Masters: Tapping Into the Power of Love Hardcover – May, 2000
Author: Brian L. Weiss ID: 0446525960

.com Review

Author and physician Brian Weiss first delved into the realm of past-life therapy in his highly successful and controversial book Many Lives, Many Masters. Although he has since developed a huge following in the field of “regression therapy” (in which clients are hypnotized in order to access previous lifetimes), Weiss has focused this latest book on the here and now. “Past lives are still a significant concept and value for me, but understanding and expressing love, joy, and inner peace in my everyday life have become more significant,” Weiss explains.

Weiss, who is now an internationally sought-after lecturer, uses his teaching voice to address happiness and love in our current lifetimes. This is indeed a “how-to” book, packed with ambitious discussions on why we choose to “come back” to our current lives and the role of fate. He also devotes many chapters to spiritual self-help, showing readers why it’s important to let go of anger, develop a loving spiritual family, and cultivate love and compassion. No, these are not new or original concepts. But those who liked the past-life visions and riveting anecdotes in Many Lives, Many Masters will find themselves equally riveted. –Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly

According to Weiss, the earth is like a “chaotic one-room schoolhouse” in which evolving souls reincarnate to learn faith, charity, compassion and the transcendence of fear and anger. The author, a psychiatrist and expert in psychopharmacology, was moved to learn more about reincarnation after patients under hypnosis described detailed, verifiable memories of past-life experiences. Meditation and work with mediums then brought him in contact with “master spirits,” who helped him develop a psychoanalytic method grounded in spirituality. The spirits’ messages, which Weiss first presented in Many Lives, Many Masters, appear here in condensed form and elucidate themes such as karma, obstacles to happiness and joy, the reunion of soul mates and love’s capacity to connect souls across all dimensions. The author employs case studies, some involving celebrities like singer Gloria Estefan and bestselling author and medium James Van Praagh, to explain past-life regressions, near-death experiences and communication with deceased loved ones. While Weiss’s points about the paranormal are provocative, his book would have benefited from the addition of case studies clarifying how the integration of spirituality into psychotherapy enhances the healing process. And his contention that contemporary psychotherapies lack spiritual roots and are “in their death throes” will be widely challenged in psychiatric circles. Still, his work sheds light on a controversial topic worthy of serious attention. Agent, Joni Evans. (May)

The "Masters" are highly evolved souls not in physical form who pass along messages of love, wisdom and universal truth. Psychiatrist Brian Weiss, famous for his books on reincarnation, received these messages through various means including his own meditations and the past-life regressions of his patients. Whether someone is a long-time spiritual seeker or just beginning their spiritual journey, there is so much of value in this book!
In each chapter, I’m impressed by 3 things: (1) the quote from the masters that opens the chapter, (2) the amazing stories Weiss shares, and (3) the plethora of practical advice.
(1) Each chapter begins with a quote from the masters about 1 to 2 paragraphs long-a lot of wisdom packed into a few words. These messages include the importance of love, forgiveness, patience, meditation and visualization; and information about reincarnation and life in spiritual form. Although these messages corroborate other spiritual and metaphysical books I’ve read, it’s great to have messages on so many topics succinctly boiled down to their essence in one book.
(2) Each chapter contains fascinating stories that reinforce the masters’ quote which begins the chapter. The stories come from many sources including Brian Weiss’ life, his regression patients and workshop participants, and experiences with talented mediums such as James Van Praagh. The stories are truly amazing, and if the reader believes the author is telling the truth, provide incontrovertible evidence the existence of the soul outside the human body via out of the body-, between life-, and reincarnation experiences. I recognized several stories from Weiss’ previous books, but most were new.
Reincarnation. Many people believe we are on this planet to learn lessons, a spiritual school of sorts, and we keep returning until we get it right. While others still hold true to the tenets of their religions: We go to Heaven if we’re good and to Hell if we’re bad. While the belief in reincarnation has been part of the teachings in the eastern countries for centuries, it is a relatively new concept for many in the west. Have you ever visited a place for the first time and known where to find everything without the use of a guidebook or map? You just knew as though you had lived there before. Well, maybe you did live there in a previous life. Psychiatrist Brian Weiss has spent the past twenty years learning more and more about reincarnation and past life regression. His fourth book, "Messages From the Masters: Tapping Into the Power of Love," promotes what Weiss feels is the most important lesson we can learn – Love. Weiss hasn’t always believed in reincarnation. In fact, as a respected Yale University trained psychiatrist, he dealt in scientific fact. But, twenty years ago, when a patient visited his office for treatment to rid herself of numerous phobias, his beliefs slowly began to change. Weiss calls this patient Catherine in his first book, "Many Lives, Many Masters." In the book he tells the story of how when he used traditional regression therapy, sending Catherine back into her memory to her childhood to find the root of her fears, he was astonished to find her describing a life 4,000 years ago in a place like Babylon where she died in a flood. Weiss at first thought Catherine was experiencing a fantasy, or maybe remembering a movie. In any case, her fear of drowning disappeared.

First, I didn’t have to take chemistry, biology, or physics for my test. My test didn’t even have physics as an option. I don’t see how this book wouldn’t help with those subjects, though. Some of the sample questions were actually on my test. I ended up with a 94.4, and I only went over the 3 sample tests once. I also went over the HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review that is put out by Elsevier. I would recommend using that book in conjunction with this one, especially if you’re a little weak with some of the subjects. Some of the sample questions are the same as in the McGraw-Hill book, but there aren’t as many questions. It’s mostly review with one sample test for each subject. If you’re serious about becoming a nurse, get this book and the other. You will do great.

Oh, and when researching the HESI test, a lot of people asked about the math. I got a 98 on the math, which I blame on the stupid on screen calculator. It’s mostly fractions and decimals. You will have to know conversions (metric-standard, standard-metric, F-C, C-F, etc), though there seemed to be an unending amount of fractions.

They other subjects are pretty basic, and there was more anatomy than physiology. Study the book. You will do well.

Not only was this book a great review, but I used it to tutor some classmates who didn’t pass the first time. They passed the second time!!! I made a 96% on math and 92% on reading. Good luck to all who have to take the HESI on the future! Use this book!

Very good review! I repeated each test a total of five times which took a while but really helped. I really appreciated the answer explantations as well. I took Reading, vocabulary, grammer, anatomy and physiology, biology and chemistry. Passed with flying colors. Definitely recommend!

This book is awful! I just took the Kaplan nursing entrance exam today and this book was no help at all. The writing section of the actual test is all grammar. However, this book only reviews vocabulary and spelling for the writing section. Completely useless since none of that is on the test. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Save your money and study your A&P notes for Science, get a book specifically for grammar. Math focus on your fractions and decimals. The only thing this was somewhat helpful for was the reading section. However, I would never waste my money on this book again.

Im glad my nursing program uses the Kaplan exam, not that the hesi A2 isn’t great but the Kaplan way is more focused on the nclex, so I dont have to prepare for that later once im out of nursing school I’ve got it all here. An I love the pretest in the beginning so I dont hav to go back over a&p or vocab or reading..jux math and that really helps you concentrate on your weaknesses

This is a good review if you are completely nervous and don’t know what to expect. However this does not help much with critical thinking questions, and on my test it was more of a writing section instead of vocabulary so that section did not help. I found the math and reading sections very helpful, and the science section was a good review. DO NOT RELY ON JUST THIS BOOK TO STUDY. Over all this did help me so it was worth the buy.

Christmas Jars – August 1, 2006 PDF

Christmas Jars Hardcover – August 1, 2006
Author: Visit ‘s Jason F. Wright Page ID: 159038699X

From Publishers Weekly

In a plot reminiscent of Penelope Stokes’s The Blue Bottle Club and Angela Hunt’s The Note, a journalist happens upon a human interest story that winds up teaching her lessons about love and forgiveness and renewing her own faith in human kindness. On Christmas Eve, twenty-something Hope Jensen is quietly grieving the recent loss of her adoptive mother when her apartment is robbed. The one bright spot in the midst of Hope’s despair is a small jar full of money someone has anonymously left on her doorstep. Eager to learn the source of this unexpected generosity, Hope uses her newswoman instincts to find other recipients of “Christmas jars,” digging until her search leads her to the family who first began the tradition of saving a year’s worth of spare change to give to someone in need at the holiday. Wright commits some rookie mistakes in style and pacing; the novel veers heavily toward melodrama at some junctures, and he tends to show us and tell us about his characters. Still, the heart of this novella is its transformative message about the power of giving, a compelling theme that calls to mind books like Pay It Forward and The Kingdom Assignment.

Christmas Jars is a little book with a big message about the Christmas season. In an age when Christmas gift giving has become more of an expensive routine than a heartfelt pleasure for many people, Jason Wright offers an alternative that recaptures the spirit of the season.

When young newspaper reporter Hope Jensen experienced one of those horrible Christmas Eves that are often written about in newspapers like hers, she had no reason to believe that anything good would come from the experience. Getting through her first Christmas without her adoptive mother was going to be hard enough already but, when she returned to her apartment wanting nothing more than to sleep the rest of the day away, things would get worse. Hope found her apartment trashed by burglars, something that seems to happen all too often on Christmas Eve.

Finding herself somewhere between bursting into tears and throwing a tantrum, Hope was saved from doing either when she discovered a small jar stuffed with coins and paper currency that had mysteriously appeared just inside her apartment door during all the excitement. There was nothing to indicate its source or why it had been left for her. Smelling a newspaper story, and in need of something pleasant on which to focus, Hope Jensen decided that she would solve the mystery of her Christmas jar.

What she discovered about the Christmas jar tradition in her town, and what she learned about herself in the process, is the heart of this Christmas story. It is a story about strangers giving gifts to those who need them most, and how those who received the jars on one Christmas often gave Christmas jars of their own to others on the next.

First, I would like to thank HarperTeen for sending me an ARC of this book to review.

Have you read Pride and Prejudice? If you haven’t, then you should. I mention this because it plays an important role in this novel. Not that you have to have read it to understand A Step Toward Falling, but I think Austen’s original title – First Impressions – is particularly relevant here. It’s also a wonderful read.

This is not just about learning to do the right thing. It’s about learning to get to know people. Not judging them by what they look like at a first glance. And it succeeds wonderfully.

I loved this book. I loved all of the parallels to Pride and Prejudice (one of my all-time favorites), I loved the characters, I loved the story, I loved how much diversity there was without it seeming like things were just thrown in for the sake of diversity. It’s a book about people with disabilities. And it’s a book about highschoolers.

A Step Toward Falling poses a very important question. If you saw someone getting attacked, what would you do? Would you freeze up? Would you go fight the attacker? Would you run and get help? I honestly can’t answer this question. I want to say that I would run and get help. But that is what I want to say. Because the reality is this: I would likely be so afraid that I would freeze. And that is what happens with Emily and Lucas here when they see Belinda being attacked. They just freeze up.

The characters are wonderful. Belinda started out as a bit odd. But after a bit, I figured her out. Yes, she’s odd. But it’s part of her charm. It’s part of who she is. Emily and Lucas are so guilt-ridden that they don’t even complain about their punishment for failing to help Belinda.

Let’s talk about first impressions–they are IMPORTANT.

If, for example, you start reading a new book, and the first glimpses you get of ALL THREE main characters are less than flattering, you might be tempted to toss said book aside in disgust, and hope the next one goes better.

YES. You might.

And honestly, in this situation, I would not blame you. Not even a little bit.

So here’s the deal–I’m not one of those the-less-romance-the-better types. I’m the opposite, in fact. In most cases, a book completely devoid of romance is a book I will almost certainly find lacking. That being said, I don’t like romance tossed in willy nilly, b/c, this book needs romance, so, "Hey! You two over there! Yeah, you! Make googly eyes at each other. I don’t care if it doesn’t make sense, just do it! Thaaaat’s it, muuuuuchhh better."

In fantasy, one of the most common ways for romance to play out is the Arranged Marriage scenario. Neither party is happy about it, but something IMPORTANT is at stake, so two self-sacrificing souls agree to wed for the greater good. Then, despite the obvious unfairness of their situation, stuff happens, they fall in love, and they live HEA.

And this makes you happy, b/c SELF-SACRIFICE.

But what if Princess is a narcissistic little brat who not only runs away from her arranged marriage but drags one of her good friends along with her?

B/c who cares that the only way to ensure the safety of her family and the general population in the face of a barbarian invasion is to keep with tradition and unite her family with Prince’s family, b/c NEITHER family has the strength to survive alone?

Not Princess. *frowns*

And not only does she not care, she laughs ALL THE TIME.
I have never read a novel by Mary E. Pearson before, but after reading this one I want to go out and buy all of her previous works! This book was everything I wanted and more. While it was not perfect, I couldn’t have asked for a more unique series to get me out of my reading slump.

Princess Lia is a First Daughter. As a First Daughter she is expected to have the gift of sight, though she hasn’t showed any signs of such a gift. This gift is especially important because her parents are marrying her off to another kingdom with the promise that her gift of sight will be able to benefit both countries united. However, Lia hates pretending she is something that she truly is not and she’s never met the prince she is to be married to, so she runs away right before her wedding with the help of one of her servants and friends.

Lia is a very unique character. In the beginning, she’s not that easy to get behind. She seems like any other spoiled princess not wanting to take part in her princess duties so she runs away in rebellion. However, the readers quickly realize that she really is unlike all of the other princesses and she truly does prefer the hard work that a peasant has to do to the politicking that a princess must endure. Because of this it takes time to warm up to Lia, so it’s hard to get behind her in the beginning of the story. You just want to shake her at times when she claims to want to blend in, but she doesn’t change her name or treat soldiers any differently. Her character growth is literally insane and by the end of the book I had nothing but respect and admiration for this rogue princess. I am rooting for her like no other.

The love interest in this book is also someone to root for.
